CARTUJO VIII Reaches USDF Milestone

CARTUJO VIII Finished His Requirements for  a USDF Performance Certificate

CARTUJO VIII & Holger Bechtloff

USPRE is pleased to announce that Cartujo VIII owned by Dr. Judith Streisand and ridden in Grand Prix by Holger Bechtloff, finished his requirements for the USDF Performance Certificate in Grand Prix on Juanuary 7th 2012.

The requirements are ten (10) scores above 60 % in a particular level. Cartujo VIII received a Performance Certificate in First level when he started showing, so he has now come full circle.

Judith Streisand said: ” It has been a wonderful journey – Holger, my husband and I always had faith in this horse, and I am so pleased that P.R.E.’s are now getting the recognition they deserve, both in the U.S. and internationally. Thank you to USPRE for helping to promote the “original dressage horse . Ten years ago when I bought Cartujo, I was told that P.R.E.’s were fun to ride, but not to compete. They were not ” real ” dressage horses. I did not care as I loved the breed, and, happily found that they are indeed real dressage horses. Cartujo has not only been fun to ride, but also to train and compete “

The Board of USPRE congratulates the dressage pair for their recent achievement at Grand Prix level and acknowledges Judith & Shelly Streisand for their commitment to campaigning their wonderful horse.

USPRE Signs Protocol to Manage Stud Book Services

Last year, during SICAB, a collaboration agreement was signed between USPREA (United States PRE Association) and ANCCE, by which the US association would begin, as of February 1, 2012, to work directly to handle Studbook matters through its office in Wellington, Florida.  This agreement is an advantage for breeders in North America (USA and Canada) as they will be able to work through USPRE thus facilitating direct and fluid communications.USPREA IS THE ANCCE PRE STUDBOOK COLLABORATING ORGANIZATION IN USA AND CANADA AS OF FEBRUARY 1, 2012

The agreement, signed in Sevilla by Kimberly van Kampen Boyer and Javier Conde as Presidents of their respective Associations, designates the North American association as a collaborator for the only official register of PRE horses in the world and that is backed by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

USPRE is the largest PRE organization in North America, with some 800 members all over the US and Canada.  Moreover, this association has extensive experience in the promotion of the Purebred Spanish Horse.

Therefore, as of the first of February of this year, 2012, breeders in the USA and CANADA must send their questions, requests for service (inscriptions, revisions, change of ownership, etc) and all PRE Studbook related issues to:

2012 Dressage Scholarships

United States PRE Association (USPRE) Announces the Recipients of the 2012 Dressage Scholarships

The United States PRE Association is pleased to announce the following recipients of the 2012 Dressage Scholarships:

Professional Rider ( $ 2000.00 ): Sabine Schut-Kery and Marques

Sabine Schutz & Marques

Youth Rider ( $ 1500.00 ): Emily Copeland and Festivo

Emily Copeland & Festivo

Amateur Rider ( $ 1500.00 ): Suzanne O’Brien and Innato HGF

Suzanne O'Brien & Innato HGF

Late last year, USPRE received a record number of applications for the 2012 Dressage Scholarships with a surprising statistic. 75 % of the applicants were professional dressage riders, which illustrates what USPRE has been seeing for the past few years–a significant increase in interest in the PRE horse by FEI-level riders, and professional dressage riders in particular.

This year’s Scholarship advisor was Robert Dover who selected the recipients. Robert is an Advisory Board Member of USPRE and a PRE horse owner and enthusiast. He reviewed all of the applications and videos and commented on the importance of the combination–horse and rider together in partnership–in his selection criteria.

From a field of so many good horses and riders, Robert noted that his “overall winner” was Emily Copeland on Festivo–a 7 year old bay PRE stallion by Gaucho III that participated in the 2011 USEF National Young Horse Championships as a 6 year old. This pair is currently in training with Tina Konyot and will be doing an exhibition at the upcoming USPRE PRE-Show on February 15 at the Global Dressage Festival.

Additionally, Robert commented on the quality of both horse and rider in reference to Professional recipient Sabine Schut-Kery and her 8 year old black stallion, Marques, as they prepare to enter FEI-level competition this year. He noted also that another pair, Cindy Ramirez-Smith and Decoroso HGF, were close seconds among the Professional applicants.

For the amateurs, Robert selected Suzanne O’Brien and her 6 year old gelding Innato HGF (by Idilio II) and commented on the harmony between the horse and rider in their work together.

USPRE Scholarship funds are to be used for training expenses, and our recipients will provide a report at the end of the year on their experiences. USPRE has already seen top results from its Scholarship program: 2011 USPRE Youth Recipient Rachel Chowanec on Embrujado XI went on to be 2011 USEF Junior Reserve National Champion.

P.R.E. Improves, But Time Stands Still

The PRE Improves, But Time Stands Still At SICAB 2011

From November 22-27, Sevilla was yet again the host city for its national celebration of the Horse of Spain, and meeting place for all who love this breed. The event is known as SICAB (Salon Internacional del Caballo), and draws a few hundreds of thousands of people every year for its various breed and sport championships, all involving one horse breed, the Pura Raza Espanola, or the PRE Horse.

SICAB - the biggest horse fair in Spain

The event fills more than five pavilions with stabling, shopping, restaurants, exhibition arenas and hospitality stands, and there is no better place to be introduced to the culture of the south of Spain and the horse it has produced.

When I was asked to do the article again this year, I was a bit stumped. All that I could say about this year’s event has already been said in my article of a year ago, or the one before that…. I have already reflected on the year-after-year similarity in the format and production of SICAB, and the Andalusian resistance to change. The competitions and characters, as well as the sights, sounds, and flavors of SICAB are exactly the same every year. Those of us who go religiously year after year have come to expect this, if not prefer it in a way.

SICAB is the horse show where time stands still. The riding tradition in Spain is a rich legacy and you need only a few minutes on the grounds to see men and women carrying on this heritage on young fresh mounts, but in nineteenth-century riding costumes with what appears to be the same style tack as two centuries ago. The modern riding sports—ie, dressage—are widely followed by the Andalusians, but no more so than the older ones such as Doma Vaquera and Alta Escuela.

The breed classes present the highest quality specimens of the race, some with exceptional movement. Every year at SICAB, and probably in every horse breed show, there is a higher percentage of good horses in the lower age levels. Those taper off as you move up the age groups for the obvious reasons—good horses often get sold or move on to other uses. The top three however will usually come back the following year, which makes the Grand Champion contest always worth watching.

Dressage at SICAB

From the perspective of a dressage enthusiast, SICAB can be frustrating until you remember that SICAB does not promise to be something it is not. Functionality tests are not real dressage tests and are not ridden to correct directives—they are tests to show the range of a horse’s movement and are often over-ridden for that reason. The Copas for Doma Clasica (Dressage Cups) are held at the 4,5,6, Prix St George and Grand Prix levels with good prize money, and participants qualify at designated national dressage competitions throughout the year. Nevertheless, SICAB is not a rated show, and so does not always draw the most competitive pairs.

In recent years, Grand Prix has been criticized for not fielding the top PRE combinations, but this is the result of progress. There was a time I can remember when the only place for upper level PREs to be judged against each other by somewhat sympathetic eyes was at the Grand Prix at SICAB. Often young PREs getting ready to do the Grand Prix would hope to receive a good score or a win at SICAB before going against warmbloods from Northern Europe at the international levels at, say, Sunshine Tour in the spring. But times have changed for the PRE horse in competition—thanks to the success of the Spanish National Team and individual horses. PRE horses are better understood by the international dressage community, and generally judges in Europe no longer show any discrimination against this breed. As the top horses become more competitive and valuable, fewer riders or owners want to take the risk of an exhibition Grand Prix.

This year’s Grand Prix class was particularly disappointing to me because I had seen many of these horses and riders at national competitions over the summer, and they all performed better than they did at SICAB this year. The environment has to be the most challenging of any for a Grand Prix horse, with a chaotic warm-up, a dark and visually noisy arena, and all sorts of sounds and scents coming from the stock next door that has been gathered from hundreds of pastures. I applaud the efforts of the riders who present these horses—often for sale or for the pleasure of their owners who want the honor of showing a horse at SICAB. But I ask that observers be not too critical of the quality of Grand Prix without taking the circumstances into account.

SICAB - all about the PRE breed

But while time stands still at SICAB, it is not standing still for the PRE Horse in dressage, neither in Spain nor the world. The breeding, training and competing of these horses continues to improve as does, maybe even more importantly, the reception of a good Spanish horse in the top show rings of the world. Evolution starts from the ground up:

–PRE Breeders are now specializing in horses for dressage. I had the pleasure of visiting Maria Jose Ruiz Fernandez at her Yeguada Susaeta, for example, who is developing a sophisticated line of impressive moving horses from dressage performance progenitors.

–The Spanish National Championships for Young Horses had a record number of finalists—56 in the 4 Year Olds, and 37 in 5 Years Old, and 26 in 6 Years Old—with generally 50% of qualifying horses being PREs. This is only the third year of Young Horse Championships and horses qualify with scores and standings throughout the year.

–Over the past few years, Spain has added a number of CDIs and additional international circuits, so that the opportunities for riders of PREs to be evaluated by top judges has increased dramatically in a short period of time. In international competitions throughout Spain and Europe, PREs used to fill the bottom portions of the Grand Prix classes, but now often are occupying the upper third, with some placing in the top rankings.

Discussions amongst PRE breeders

–In France this year, the National Champion of Dressage was a PRE, Helio II, ridden by Arnaud Serre.

–In the United States, we are seeing an increasing number of top professionals training PREs to compete at FEI and international levels, including Yvonne Losos de Muniz, Sabine Schut-Kery, and Robert Dover. The Reserve USEF National Champion Junior Rider was Rachel Chowanec riding an imported PRE gelding.

For so many of us, it all started with SICAB. There would be other news to report about the politics of the PRE horse, the market and international studbook issues, but, like others who make this trip, I prefer to look back with a certain sentimentality on SICAB and all that it offers. It is still the place where passion is part of horsemanship, where we allow the Andalusian culture to romance us, and we are every year newly impressed with the seductiveness of man on horseback.

P.R.E Stud Book News

USPRE Signs a Cooperative Agreement for the Administration of Stud Book Paperwork in North America

Dr. Arancha Rodriguez

Following a four (4) year cooperation on P.R.E. Stud Book matters and paperwork, USPRE President, Kimberly Van Kampen Boyer and ANCCE President, Javier Conde Cerrato signed an agreement in Seville, Spain on November 25th 2011 which will pave the way for the transfer of the ” in country ” processing of Stud Book documents to USPRE commencing February 2012.

The Miami LG-ANCCE USA office will be moved in January 2012 to what is becoming widely known as the Winter Equestrian Capital of the World – Wellington, Florida.

Kimberly Van Kampen Boyer said: ” We are very pleased that USPRE will be taking a more prominent role in the services provided to American and Canadian P.R.E. Breeders.”

Javier Conde Cerrato added: ” The signing of this agreement is an evolution of the relationship which we established in 2007 and have developed over the last four years. Representing the largest number of P.R.E. Owners & Breeders in North America, it is only natural that USPRE now work directly with LG-ANCCE. “

Alexander Zilo, Kimberly Boyer, Javier Conde

Board members Joan Mack, Miguel Nunez, Alexander Zilo and US Olympian, Courtney King-Dye also travelled to SICAB for the signing ceremony.

Rider Sponsorships

USPRE Introduces International PRE Rider Sponsorships

Since its founding in 2007, USPRE has been innovative in providing support to riders of PRE horses for Dressage through regional and national High Point programs, scholarships, education and show sponsorship. During these years many Adult Amatuers, Youth and Professionals have appeared on our website featuring their successes with their PRE horses.

For 2012, the USPRE Dressage Committee will initiate a new program to provide special support and recognition to our members and professionals who are riding PRE horses at the International FEI Levels against the top competition in the country. Our criteria is that the rider have Professional status in the country in which they are competing, that the horse is a registered PRE and its owner or rider be a member of USPRE, and that the plans are for the horse to be entered into International Competition in the upcoming year (2012).

Our line-up for 2012 is an impressive one and,
as we follow the successes of several of our riders in the national levels, we expect a number of additional horse and rider pairs to join this group soon . USPRE will report back on the progress of these riders and horses, and will provide interviews with them about their experiences, their training and goals throughout the year. Watch for the riders with USPRE on their saddle pads and let’s support our future superstars!

2012 USPRE International Riders are:
