ANCCE Restructures Staff

The difficult economic situation affecting society in general and more specifically the equine sector, has forced a number of companies and organizations to apply adjustment measures that focus upon the necessary reduction of overhead costs. Without such measures, continued business activity would be impracticable.  ANCCE is not oblivious to these difficulties, and in an effort to optimize both human and economic resources, has been forced to adopt a series of measures in the management of the organization, including the inevitable restructuring of its staff.

Thus, as of February 29, five (5) Association employees have been laid-off.  These include Javier Buendía, María Tassara, Rocío Cotán, Alejandra de Leyva and Rosario Paguillo.  The first three worked at the Cortijo del Cuarto office while the other two worked at the Stud Book office.

On the other hand, having reached an agreement with USPRE to handle the PRE Stud Book in the United States and Canada, ANCCE proceeded to close its office in Miami.  This includes the services provided by Maravillas Pérez-Cela who was in charge of that office.

ANCCE wishes to express public appreciation towards those affected by these adjustment measures.  They have all been characterized by their professional spirit while working at the Association, as is the case of Javier Buendía, who has been with us for almost a decade.   We are sure that this recognition and appreciation is shared by all those members who have had an opportunity to work with them.

It is our hope that in the near future, when the causes for such staff reduction measures have been overcome—solely based economic constraints—we can once again count on their services and their added value for our sector and its needs.

Moreover, in addition to these staff-related measures, the Association is applying important reductions in its budget.  Likewise, negotiations are underway with suppliers to make adjustments, but always in an effort to maintain the services provided to breeders.

2012 Burbank CDI-W

Marques Rocks at the 2012 Burbank Mid Winter CDI

MARQUES & Sabine Schut-Kery

USPRE-sponsored FEI rider Sabine Schut-Kerry and Rhea Scott's Marques did their first National Prix St. George during the Mid Winter CDI in Burbank
They won the class with a 68.421%. Of Marques, Sabine says: " Imported from Spain in late 2009, Marques came to me in 2010. Marques has three beautiful gaits and is extremely talented, athletic, sensible and eager to work. He is a bit of a genius and is independent like a cat in his personality, which makes it very fun and interesting to work with."
At just seven years old he shows all the talent and ability for the Grand Prix movements, with especially beautiful piaffe and passage work. We are very excited about Marques' future in the competition ring. Sabine, with Marques, is the recipient of the 2012 USPRE Dressage Scholarship for Professional Riders.

USPRE Party & Awards

USPRE Party and High Point Winners for the Florida Dressage Classic

At the USPRE-sponsored Florida Dressage Classic and the new Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, the PREs made an impressive showing! The weekend kicked off with a wonderful exhibition on Wednesday night for an audience of over 400, featuring Riders and PRE horses at all levels and ranging from US Team members to Emerging Dressage Athletes as young as 13 years old. Pan American Team Alternate Endel Ots opened the evening with a Grand Prix Freestyle on Gorrion de Panatero, an 11 year old PRE Gelding owned by Lily C. Zilo. Following a Piaffe and Passage demonstration with Endel and Lily Zilo on Esmaltado, there was a heartwarming testimonial by Tina Konyot who talked about her father–master trainer Alex Konyot–and his love for Spanish and Portuguese horses. She told of witnessing their arrivals by ship as a very young girl, and how she grew up learning the upper level movements on several beautiful and gracious stallions. Tina then gave a short demonstration using USEF Young Horse finalist Emily Copeland on her super-impressive 7 year old Festivo. Lendon Gray directed a team of youth riders, most of whom had participated in her Emerging Dressage Athlete program, as they showcased their exceptional talent on beautiful PRE horses. Mica Mabragana and Rachel Chowanec performed exciting rides to music, and the evening closed with a Dancing Horses segment with a number of up and coming horses and riders making their debut in the lighted Stadium arena, including Nicholas Fyffe on Robert Dover’s four year old Fiero HGF.

Exhibition Riders were:

Emily Copeland with Festivo
Endel Ots with Gorrion de Penatoro
Rachel Chowanec with Embrujado
Sophie Hoffman with Kiwi
Lily Zilo with Esmaltado
Stephanie Zilo with Edil
Chelsea Reed with Kabilleno

Maddy Guthrie with Lentisco
Kerrigan Gulch with Camaron
Mica Mabragana with Cuatrero and Infanta
Nicholas Fyffe with Fiero

Beginning on Thursday, the focus turned to the real competition–where again our PREs excelled. USEF National Reserve Champion Rachel Chowanec continues to gain experience in this first year of riding the Young Riders tests, improving her marks as she and Embrujado XI become more experienced at what is essentially the Prix St. George level. They took first and second in the national Team and Individual tests respectively with scores of 68.28 and 67.1.
15 year old Kerrigan Gluch of Michigan traveled down to Wellington with her parents Tina and Brent to represent the EDAP riders in the USPRE exhibition, and to do her first Wellington show as a bonus. Having only ridden Camaron three times in the EDAP clinic in December, Kerrigan proved what her trainer Laurie Moore says are her particular strengths–showmanship and test-riding! They showed third level all weekend and received three of Camaron’s best scores at this level: 67.69, 67.94 and 68.415, just edging out Rachel for the Youth Rider High Point Award for USPRE.

The Adult Amateur award was won by Janne Rumbaugh with two scores over 69%.
Mica Mabragana is continuing to live up to her press with exceptionally high marks on the young mare Infanta HGF (by Idilio II). Owner Mary Magee of Chicago was on hand to see the pair as they easily topped their Training Level classes with scores of 71.42, 72.00, and 77.85! The judges praised the mare’s three excellent gaits and made special mention of the harmony between horse and rider (for which they received a 9 in collective marks from one judge). Mica and Infanta’s score of 77.85 was not only the Open High Point score for USPRE, but was the High Score for the entire Florida Dressage Classic show–a fitting conclusion to a weekend sponsored by the United States PRE Association!

Genetic Coat Testing

As of March 1, and until August 31 of this year, all breeders who inscribe a new foal with the PRE Stud Book will automatically have a genetic coat color analysis ( service 243 ) free of charge, without any need for a specific request.   Thus, when the passport for the horse is sent to the breeder, it will include a report with the genotype for the seven (7) genes that intervene in the coat color that has been analyzed.  Unless the breeder indicates otherwise, the result of the coat color analysis for the horse will be indicated in the passport with the corresponding coat color sticker.

Kind regards,

USPRE Sponsors CDI-W

USPRE Celebrates Spanish Breed as Sponsor of $50,000 CDI-W at 2012 Global Dressage Festival

True to its name the Global Dressage Festival is bringing together the best elements of dressage from all over the world. The international influence is apparent not only in terms of riders but in terms of horses. A Spanish flare is taking center ring with the P.R.E. breed.

As a sponsor of the Global Dressage Festival the USPRE is showcasing this pure Spanish breed which is elegantly entering the spotlight and winning top dressage honors.

The Vice President of the USPRE Alexander Zilo comments, “The fundamental mission of USPRE is to celebrate and promote the versatility of the Pure Spanish Horse (P.R.E.). the Horse of Kings, in every equestrian sport sector and to maintain its heritage with Spain.  Known for its intelligence, proud bearing, docile temperament and breathtaking beauty, the P.R.E. horse is well suited for every level of riding. USPRE has chosen to be a founding sponsor of Global Dressage as it is destined to be the world’s leading marketing and promotion vehicle in Dressage.”

The breed dates back to the 15th century as a prized Spanish war horse.  Its striking beauty has made it Hollywood’s choice to star in its screen epics. As a sport horse, the P.R.E.’s strength and elegance combined with its intelligence and sensitivity has suited it to be a top dressage horse.

Now with over a thousand U.S. breeders of the P.R.E. breed, its popularity is increasing. The USPRE noted with its 2012 Dressage Scholarships which benefit amateurs, juniors, and professionals, that 75% of applicants were professional dressage riders. This shows an increase in interest in the P.R.E. breed by professional riders competing at the FEI level.

The USPRE is the official studbook representative in the United States for this growing pure Spanish breed and will be showcasing many up and coming young horses at the Global Dressage Festival.

2012 USPRE Party

The 2012 USPRE Party held on Wednesday, February 15th was a vibrant night of fun-filled celebration of the Pure Spanish Horse at the new Wellington, Florida Patrons Club.  A host of the Spanish horses led the festivities with exhibitions in the new arena at the stadium section of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) where the competitions for the Global Dressage Festival (GDF) are held.

Dressage Olympian Lendon Gray, World Equestrian Games  veteran, Tina Konyot and clinician, Endel Ots enlightened the spectators in the stands and the capacity filled Patrons Club.

“The evening was a success,” said Lendon Gray. “Many different types of PRE’s, big and little ones, with riders as young as 13 to 15-years-old, came here just to have this opportunity under the lights. Some of the horses were overwhelmed by the atmosphere and party at times, but this is a great place for them to learn.”

Chef Frederic Boyer served Paella for over 500 guests on two enormous paella pans along with other Spanish food delights while music with a strong steady beat accented the piaffes being performed in the arena.

Laurie Jolliffe, a trainer from Bucks County, PA, training and showing here in Wellington for the 2012 season said, “It’s so nice to see these horses becoming more popular in the dressage competition arena.  After all, they are the epitome of the classical dressage horse.”

Mica Mabragana and Cuatrero IV, a 16.2 hand bay stallion owned by Hampton Green Farm, also took part in the USPRE exhibitions performing a Freestyle. The pair won at the first GDF competition in the FEI Prix St Georges and the FEI Intermediare I classes.  Cuatrero IV is from the Adelante/Sevillano(Albero II) lines, half-brother to Grandioso and was the 2007 Champion Six-Year Old for Dressage Suitability at the Devon Breed Show.

CARTUJO VIII Reaches USDF Milestone

CARTUJO VIII Finished His Requirements for  a USDF Performance Certificate

CARTUJO VIII & Holger Bechtloff

USPRE is pleased to announce that Cartujo VIII owned by Dr. Judith Streisand and ridden in Grand Prix by Holger Bechtloff, finished his requirements for the USDF Performance Certificate in Grand Prix on Juanuary 7th 2012.

The requirements are ten (10) scores above 60 % in a particular level. Cartujo VIII received a Performance Certificate in First level when he started showing, so he has now come full circle.

Judith Streisand said: ” It has been a wonderful journey – Holger, my husband and I always had faith in this horse, and I am so pleased that P.R.E.’s are now getting the recognition they deserve, both in the U.S. and internationally. Thank you to USPRE for helping to promote the “original dressage horse . Ten years ago when I bought Cartujo, I was told that P.R.E.’s were fun to ride, but not to compete. They were not ” real ” dressage horses. I did not care as I loved the breed, and, happily found that they are indeed real dressage horses. Cartujo has not only been fun to ride, but also to train and compete “

The Board of USPRE congratulates the dressage pair for their recent achievement at Grand Prix level and acknowledges Judith & Shelly Streisand for their commitment to campaigning their wonderful horse.
