PRE EXPO 2009

The inaugural Spring Pure Spanish Horse show in Southern California—PRE Expo 2009—was held at the beautiful mountain-top City of Industry Expo Center in late May PRE Expo was designed to be a preliminary show to the larger Feria del Caballo Espanol in September, which was held for the first time last year to great success In its own right, however, PRE Expo was a significant event and surpassed expectations Over 125 horses were entered in competition to be judged in the ANCCE-sanctioned classes by the Spanish Morphology Judge D Antonio Vasques Additionally, another 90 horses were registered at the show for the various exhibitions and evening programs, as well as for sale The beautiful Los Angeles-area showgrounds was filled with PRE horses of high quality and training, representing both the large breeders of the region as well as the smaller breeders who were new to the venue The event was sponsored in part by the United States PRE Association—the breeder and owner-supported organization which acts as a direct liaison between the American PRE community and ANCCE, the Spanish Breeders’ Association and management of the PRE Parent Studbook “I envy the breeders in Southern California for their high numbers of fine examples of PRE bloodstock as well as for their strong sense of community,” says USPRE President Kimberly Van Kampen Boyer, who attended the show “The show series that they have developed in this area—the PRE Expo and the Feria del Caballo—have quickly become the top shows in the country for PRE breeders, based on the criteria of both numbers and quality I am very impressed with the young horses that I saw and with the promise of continued improvement in the breed here in the US” Show Coordinator Gustavo Adolfo Aldana commented “As Show Coordinator, I am very please with the response from all the breeders and participants, and especially with the enthusiasm of the new breeders I am also grateful to have worked with a very special team this year at PRE EXPO 2009: Ramiro Vega, Erica Hernandez, Jennefer Stewart and Ramiro Mejia And also I would like to thank USPRE and all sponsors for their support” Show Manager Jennifer Stewart echoed the comments of Gustavo Aldana: “The judge Antonio Vazquez was amazing, a very good judge, and a very nice person to work with And the ANCCE computer program is WONDERFUL!” During the three days of the show, ANNCE representatives D Pedro Pons and D Ignacio Candau held several seminars and meetings with the US breeders to discuss the proposed ANCCE Scheme of Selection for the future of the PRE breed and many matters pertaining to the improvement of the horse were discussed from various points of view US Breeders were encouraged to participate in the data collection necessary for the University-led research The general impression for the program was very positive While the days were filled with morphology and functionality competitions and the normal activities that make up the work of breeders in a convention setting, each evening was highlighted by a traditional program of horses and music that characterizes the Mexican-American community in Southern California Hundreds of spectators enjoyed the program, as well as the many food and shopping stands that surrounded the arena In the arena, the competition was close and many fine products of good bloodlines were presented according to the Spanish regulations In the end, the Champions represented a sampling of the best of the local breed farms, both large and small Even so, many participants commented that PRE Expo was just a taste of what was coming in September, at which time over 300 horses are expected The Breeders Committee extended its best wishes form  a full recovery to Alexander Zilo following his hopitalization
